Homemade finger paints…

Maybe it’s because I used to teach high school art…or perhaps it’s because I love a brand new box of crayons…or any new art supply for that matter.  Art supplies make my {heart} happy.
I tried a recipe I found recently for making homemade finger paints for Jaxon…because…you know…I’d prefer him not eat paint made with funky chemicals. And let’s be honest…he’s 15 months old and he’s going to taste-test it. I just know it. I loved how these turned out and I had to share.
Paints
Aren’t they so pretty!!! Yaaaay! I’m totally in love with them!
I used left-over baby food jars for containers…you know the ones you hang on to because you swear they are good for something!. Lol.

**Please note: This recipe has been featured in many places and I've had TONS of questions about the texture outcome. If you add too much cornstarch you will get gloppy paint. Just reduce cornstarch or thin with water for a smoother texture.

Also - I NEVER said these were meant to be literally EATEN by kiddos. When we made these - Jaxon was at the stage where  he was putting everything in his mouth and I didn't want him to accidentally eat some crazy store-bought paints. For me at least these were safer and homemade. Please do not re-post the recipe as EDIBLE paints for kids to eat as they are not snacks or food for kiddos! Thank you bunches!!

Here’s the recipe:

WOW! This is awesome! I am so going to make this...finger paint can be so expensive and we go through it so fast! Thank you!

Does the food coloring stain fingers?

Tiffany said...

We have made this recipe multiple times and not had any issues with staining on fingers. Of course, I'm sure it would depend on the type of food coloring used such as liquid and/or gel colorings!

I always make Jaxon wear paint shirts for projects like this so I can't say if it doesn't stain clothes. I would think it could be a possibility!

Thanks for asking!♥

Thanks for answering, I lost this post and have been looking for it for a month to make some again and forgot who put it up, I was looking at one of you're newer posts and I saw your link to this, thanks again!

Do you know how long this would last without getting moldy? Should leftovers be stored in the fridge? Love this idea!

That is awesome! I paint with my 2 year old and my 1 year old is showing an interest in hitting the paper as well so I thin maybe I will do that this week! Thanks so much for sharing!

FYI: Food coloring is most often made from petroleum. The stuff we fuel our cars with. For a truly chemical free paint use natural food colors.

Rebecca said...

What kind of food coloring do you use? Do you need to use a lot to get such vibrant colors? Thanks for sharing! This looks like so much fun!

Thanks.

Howdy every body!! Thank you BUNCHES for stopping by and commenting!!

There have been a few questions about the paints molding - honestly we used ours up so fast that I have no idea if they start to get moldy! Maybe someone can post if they had issues with this!

Happy painting!!

Grace had a great point about using the all-natural food colorings for completely natural paints! I will definitely have to try that! Thanks for the AWESOME idea Grace!!

Perfect, I bought fingerpaint paper but got regular paint, doh! I'll make this recipe for finger paint instead of going out to find it in every color.

Does this recipe make enough for all those colors you have, and do you put the food coloring in the jars and mix it in?

Love this idea, thank you so much for posting!! I am sure you could use the food coloring used for cake frosting (ie. Wilton). Since it is food grade, it should keep "taste tests" safe :)

Thanks for the recipe! We made 2 batches...regular colors and neon! I was wondering...or paint seems a little "tight". Did i do something wrong? When it was first done the consistency was PERFECT, but once it cooled and sat over night (sealed, of course..lol), it is kinda clumpy. Is that how it's supposed to be? I added a touch of water to "loosen" it up some...it helped. Thanks!

sandra said...

I made this in the morning, but saved it as a craft for after nap time. By the afternoon, the paint had cooled and was also clumpy. The kids dove right into it and smeared it all over their picture, but I think it should probably be used warm - or sooner than later - for a more paint like consistency. Found this via pinterest. Great fun for our family! Thanks.

found your project on pinterest! love it. am making it now. had to make a re-do batch because i found that if you cook it TOO long, it ends up really clumpy. when i took it off when it was thick, but still pretty liquidy, it didn't seem to clump. LOVE this! thank you!

Hi, I just tried making the homemade finger paint and I'm wondering if there's a point of cooking it too much? The reason I ask is that after the finger paints cooled to room temperature, they solidified, thus are super hard to spread. Do you have any advice? Thanks.

Virginia said...

Okay just made this and the soon-to-be 3 year old is lovin it! I am the poster child for impatient (crazy part is I'm a teacher!) and felt it wasn't getting thick quick enough, so I added more corn starch. Bad idea! But we just added more water and it turned out great! Think we are gonna make this for party favors for her birthday!

As far as the FD&C food colors, from what I understand they're derived from petroleum products (interestingly, the Wikipedia entry doesn't come right out and say it, but mentions below that Norway banned all coal-tar-derived products).

Remember also that even if your child doesn't directly eat the finger paints, the skin is an organ through which things are absorbed into the system (hence the nicotine, etc., patch delivery systems used for various drugs). Also, from what I have read, many of the barriers that protect various organs in the body from toxins, especially the blood-brain barrier, are not fully formed in children, especially preschool age.

As far as links, see

http://www.feingold.org/

Note that an article in Lancet (major British medical journal) showed issues with "children in the general population" who ingested these or similar compounds: http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673607613063/abstract

Hope this helps.

Lindsey said...

I made these last week. The consistency I got was similar to petroleum jelly and the result on paper looked similar to watercolors. I was really happy with them and thought the paintings looked beautiful. There was a bit of staining on my son's hands, but after a bath, I didn't notice it anymore. After one week of sitting on the counter in reused baby food jars, tightly sealed with the tops on, the paints were moldy! So, I think I might keep them in the fridge next time. If anyone has any tips on how to keep them from molding, pass them along! Thanks for the recipe!

.tasha said...

I tried finding 'natural' food colouring but the health food stores looked at me like I had three heads. where do you get ones that are fine to ingest?

.tasha said...

Where do you find them? the health food store I went to doesn't even carry food colouring...

.tasha said...

Thank you!

Anonymous said...

For all those worrying about using 'natural' food colouring - ALL food colouring is safe to eat. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell it. See, that's what the whole FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is about - making sure that things that are sold as things you can add to FOOD, are actually safe to eat.

This is where a little science is a very dangerous thing - LOTS of things are made of petroleum products. That doesn't mean they're all the same thing you put in your car. (Gee, ever put Vaseline on your lips? But hold on it's petroleum jelly! Oh noz!) But hey, if you're dumb enough to try it go ahead - try putting food colouring in your car and see how that works.

I know I'm sounding rude here - but THINK people! It's FOOD colouring. OF COURSE it's safe to eat.

Anonymous said...

Susan, your level of scientific illiteracy is just plain scary. To suggest that ingesting large quantities of artificial colouring is the same as touching them? Absurd. I suppose you're one of those parents who thinks 'natural is best' - in which case you'd have no problem letting your kids play with a cowpie (doesn't get much more natural than that) but play doh? Heaven forbid! FWIW the skin is actually an incredibly good barrier; very few drugs are administered via patches and those drugs that are are (1) slow release (eg you have to have the patch on for several hours) and (2) not high-dose (eg you don't need a fast, high-dose fix of the drug for it to be effective). You want to avoid letting your kids ingest bottles of food colouring at a time? Good for you. You want to keep them from touching - with their fingers - something that has a teeny bit of food colouring in it? Honey, your kids touch far worse things than that any given day. It's called soap. Use it.

The recipe called for too much water so the paint did not thicken, it was just watery..

Anonymous said...

For those of you asking abt the mold issue, this recipe is similar to "atole", a sweet drink made in Latin America. It WILL mold, and not just because of the sugar but because if the starch, which mold or yeasts convert to sugar. Refrigerate it, by all means, but use it before a week or it will turn watery. Also, reheating cornstarch, or cooking it too long, will eventually eliminate its ability to congeal. As a gift, I would make it the day, or night, before the party and include the recipe for mom or dad to make if they like it. GREAT idea to use this as paint. Actually, my grandma used cornstarch to make glue to. She'd add a Tbs of cornstarch to half a cup or less of water andcook until it became very thick. She'd then add a drop our so if lime juice if she was going to also use it the next day to keepit from drying out too quickly. GREAT for any kind of paper but nit meant to last, as in real artwork.

Can't wait to try this out! Does the paint actually dry so you can save the artwork? And does the artwork turn moldy as well? I hope not as that would be a waste of the beautiful imaginations of my kids. If anyone knows please let me know! Thanks!

Yes the paint drys and so far nothing has molded. It did smell a little after a day or so but nothing to bad. I keep all paint in the fridge as it is food based. I use wilton food coloring for cake frosting it will give you vibrant colors with little color and is safe if it is ingested. In the fridge it should last about a month. Only use small mason jars like the ones for jelly if you are making some to last. That way you have some for a couple of uses and by yhe time its shelf life is over the paint will be gone.
